Political relations

The implementation of a Debt Reduction Development Contract (€537M over the period 2006-2010) in Cameroon - our biggest one in Africa - has been an opportunity to improve our bilateral ties significantly.

There have been numerous ministerial trips in both directions in recent years. President Biya’s most recent official visit to France dates back to July 2009. Two months earlier, the Prime Minister’s trip to Yaoundé made it possible to breathe new life into our bilateral relationship with the signing of a defence partnership agreement and an agreement on the collective management of migration flows.

In December 2009, Paul Biya attended the meeting in Paris of heads of State of the COMIFAC before the Copenhagen summit on climate change.

In the context of the ceremonies for the 50th anniversary of Cameroon’s Independence, celebrated on 20 May 2010 and at which France was represented by the Minister of Ecology, Energy and Sustainable Development, Mr. Jean-Louis Borloo, Cameron organized an international conference on the theme “Africa, a chance for the world: realities and challenges”. Among others, Michel Rocard, Alain Joyandet, Michel Charasse and Alain Juppé participated in this event.
