Because of long-standing historic ties, the prominent role France played in the signing of the Paris Accords and our level of cooperation, France continues to occupy a special place with Cambodia and to be its preferred contact in Europe.
Based on this, a more in-depth political dialogue marked by frequent high-level contacts has been created.
In 2005, the official visit of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen featured the signing of the first Framework Partnership Document. In November 2006, King Sihamoni made a State visit to France, and Prime Minister Hun Sen made another official to France in July 2009 and attended the 14 July parade as guest of honour.
On 1 October 2010 in Paris, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Hor Namhong, signed a policy paper on bilateral cooperation with his French counterpart. Taking Cambodia’s evolution into consideration, the two countries have decided to adapt their cooperation, stressing job creation, human capital building and the promotion of private French investments. This initiative has resulted in the resumption of Air France flights to Cambodia and the launch of new projects supporting Cambodian universities.
On 2 and 3 July 2011, Prime Minister François Fillon made an official visit to Cambodia, which gave him the opportunity to meet with the Prime Minister and the King. He opened the Baphuon temple, which was restored to a large extent through French expertise and support. The Ministers of Transport and Culture and the Secretary of State for Foreign Trade accompanied the Prime Minister.
