Political relations

Through its bilateral contacts as well as its position in multilateral bodies (Security Council, IMF, World Bank), France has endeavoured to mobilize the international community to support the peace process in Burundi, and in particular to encourage the deployment of a 5,600-strong peacekeeping force. Because of the close ties between Burundi, Rwanda and the DRC, the success of Burundi’s transition is a key issue for the stabilization of the Great Lakes region.

France and Burundi maintain regular political contacts. Former President Pierre Buyoya visited Paris on October 20, 2009.
