Humanitarian actions

In the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis in May 2008, France mobilized extensively to help the victims. Emergency aid of 2 million euros was established to finance the actions of French NGOs present in the field.

The National Marines projection and command ship, Mistral, was dispatched off the coast of Myanmar with about 1,000 tonnes of rice and humanitarian supplies on board, making it possible to supply 100,000 people with food and water for 15 days and shelters for 60,000 disaster victims, and to respond to the most urgent medical risks thanks to a supply of medications and mosquito nets. In view of the Burmese government’s refusal to allow the ship to enter territorial waters, the cargo was transferred to a commercial boat, which arrived in Rangoon on 5 June 2008.

This is the most significant donation in kind to reach Myanmar.
