Given the reinforced trade sanctions following the European Council’s decision in August 2009, trade between France and Myanmar is very limited and steadily decreasing: amounting to €16 million in 2010 (€96 million in 2000).
France is not a major investor in Myanmar. The primary French project approved by the Investment Commission is Total’s, representing an investment of 480 million USD. Total, operator of the Yadana gas field, holds a 31% stake. The U.S. company Chevron, also present in the consortium, holds 28%, the Thai company PTTEP 25%, and the Burmese company MOGE 15%. Most of the gas produced is for the Thai market.
