In the late 1980s and early 1990s bilateral relations experienced a boom related to President Mitterrand’s visit in 1990 and the French proposal of a development program for preventing floods. Mrs. Hasina, Prime Minister at the time, visited France in 1999.
Since then, recent ministerial visits have confirmed this political dialogue. The Bangladeshi Foreign Minister, Mr. Morshed Khan, visited France in April 2006, a first since Bangladesh’s independence. The Bangladeshi Secretary of State for Justice and Parliamentary Relations conducted a working visit to Paris in May 2009; Jean-Louis Borloo visited Dhaka in October 2009 in preparation for the Copenhagen Summit; and Martin Hirsch, High Commissioner for Active Solidarity visited Bangladesh in December 2009. He met Professor Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize Winner and founder of the Grameen Bank specializing in micro-credit.
Dr. Dipu Moni, the Bangladeshi Foreign Minister, was received in Paris by Mr. Bernard Kouchner on June 21st, 2010. This meeting afforded both countries the opportunity to give new impetus to our relations.
