Economic relations
Despite considerable potential, bilateral trade between France and Afghanistan remains very weak. French exports to Afghanistan stood at 45.7 million euros in 2010. They dropped 10.5% compared with 2009 because of decreased sales of electronic, IT and agricultural equipment. They account for less than 2% of French exports to South Asia (although a large amount of French merchandise is re-exported from Pakistan or Dubai). In 2010, imports reflected a very limited financial volume of 1.5 million euros.
Major French groups with a presence in Afghanistan include Airbus (two airliners and two freighters), Thales (NATO’s secure telecommunications network) and Sagem (electronic defence equipment). There are also a few SMEs, such as Feljas Masson, supplying water to Kabul.
