Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs, spoke december 11 on the telephone with Vitali Klitschko, leader of the Ukrainian party, UDAR, which represents one of the main opposition forces in Ukraine. Vitali Klitschko was forced to postpone his visit to France due to the political situation in Ukraine.
Mr. Fabius and Mr. Klitschko discussed developments in the Ukrainian situation and the measures to be taken in order to peacefully resolve the crisis. Laurent Fabius rejected any use of force and called on the parties to demonstrate restraint and engage in dialogue. He underscored France’s attachment to ensuring that the public authorities respect the freedom of opinion and expression.
France supports the efforts undertaken to reach a political solution. The minister of foreign affairs reaffirmed the importance that France attaches to the launch of a genuine reform process in Ukraine. For France, the signing of the association agreement between Ukraine and the EU remains a desirable and important prospect.
