Ukraine – Statement by the Foreign Ministry Spokesman (March 13, 2014)

Since the beginning of the crisis in Ukraine, France has defended respect for freedoms and upheld democracy, a rejection of all violence and consideration of Ukraine’s diversity.

This is the message which the Minister, Laurent Fabius, sent to all the Ukrainian political players, including the Svoboda [Freedom] party, on 20 and 21 February with his German and Polish counterparts. A representative of Russia was taking part in the discussions.

France notes with concern that these values are currently being challenged in Crimea, where, in particular, journalists of all nationalities are being threatened and falling victim to violence and where the freedom of information is being impeded.

France will continue upholding democratic values in Ukraine, with due respect for the Ukrainian constitution and international law. We expect positive signs of conciliation and dialogue from Russia, rather than a futile war of words.
