Relations with the United States
A member of NATO, and a partner in the areas of armament and energy (construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline), Turkey is a partner of the United States and the international community as a whole - in the fight against terrorism as well.
On the Iraq issue: in November 2003, the Turkish government decided not to send troops. However, it has since authorized the use of the Incirlik base for US troop rotations. Turkey remains very vigilant with regard to the management of the Kurdish issue.
The United States was decisively influential in the financial assistance Ankara obtained from international financial institutions (31 billion dollars) to recover from the economic crisis. In addition, the US gave Turkey a bilateral loan of 8.5 billion dollars. High-level contacts are frequent. Ms. Rice has visited Ankara many times and Mr. Erdogan met with President Bush in early June 2005.
