Tunisia – Human rights – Adoption of a law on violence against women (26 July 2017)

The adoption by the Tunisian Parliament of a law on violence against women is a major step forward which we welcome.

This unanimously adopted text strengthens the protection of and assistance for victims. It notably abolishes the provisions allowing for the dismissal of charges against perpetrators of violence against female minors if the perpetrator is married to the victim. This historic decision by the Tunisian Parliament confirms Tunisia’s commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms. We hope that this law will improve the lives of Tunisian women and that discrimination against them will diminish.

France lends its full support to Tunisia in its action to strengthen the rule of law, which is key to consolidating democracy over the long term.

France works to combat all forms of violence and discrimination based on gender. It tirelessly defends women’s rights, independence and freedom everywhere and works to combat all forms of violence against them.
