Syria – Publication of the report by the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria (February 19, 2013)
The UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria has just published a new report. In this report it denounces the suffering endured by the Syrian people as a result of the increased radicalization and militarization of the crisis as well as a dire humanitarian situation.
The report highlights the crimes against humanity committed by the government forces and their affiliated militia. It also mentions the human rights violations perpetrated by armed opposition groups, underscoring that they are not comparable in terms of intensity and scale.
We want the Human Rights Council to adopt, in the next few weeks, a resolution calling for the respect of human rights and international humanitarian law. It must also renew the mandate of the commission of inquiry.
All those responsible, without exception, for the crimes denounced by the commission of inquiry must be held accountable for their actions. In this context, France supports the international commission of inquiry’s calls for the situation to be referred to the International Criminal Court by the UN Security Council so that the perpetrators of the most serious crimes can be prosecuted.
