Syria - United Nations – Resumption of inter-Syrian negotiations in Geneva (16 May 2017)

France welcomes the resumption of inter-Syrian negotiations today in Geneva under the auspices of the UN and Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General Staffan de Mistura, for whom France reaffirms its full support.

The road map for the negotiations, collectively agreed upon by the international community with a view toward achieving a genuine political transition, is clear: the Geneva Communique and UNSCR 2254.

The only way to achieve lasting peace in Syria is through a political solution; we therefore urge both parties to continue the dialogue in a constructive manner. The Syrian regime in particular must demonstrate its commitment to negotiating in good faith.

Nevertheless, France remains deeply concerned at the repeated violations of the cessation of hostilities by the regime, as well as the continued obstacles to full, unconditional and unimpeded humanitarian access in the country.

We call on the guarantors of the cessation of hostilities – primarily Russia and Iran – to exert the necessary pressure on the regime to put an end to the suffering of the population.
