France is fully mobilized with respect to the drastic situation in Syria. The UN Security Council met on August 8 to discuss the situation in Aleppo.
This “Arria-Formula” meeting, incorporating civil society representatives, allowed member states to gather testimony on the untenable situation of civilians in Aleppo, exacerbated by bombing by the regime and its supporters, and particularly the bombing of medical facilities. This meeting also demonstrated yet again the urgent need to establish humanitarian access in accordance with international law and humanitarian principles and in keeping with the Security Council’s repeated requests.
Today, during Security Council consultations attended by special envoy Staffan de Mistura, France will reiterate its concern about the deadlocked political process and the responsibility of the Syrian regime, in view of the fact that the transition was not instituted on August 1.
