Syria - Q&A - Excerpts from the daily press briefing (15.06.17)

Q - You hosted a delegation from SAMS yesterday; did you pledge assistance to that group, which works in the Idlib area?

A - Emergency medical aid and healthcare for civilians in Syria, where 13 million people need medical care, are priorities for France.

Since 2013, we have been funding the Union de Soins et de Secours Médicaux (UOSSM), an NGO that supports more than 120 hospitals and more than 200 healthcare facilities. SAMS (the Syrian American Medical Society) is one of France’s interlocutors, particularly when it comes to the call to protecting medical personnel and infrastructures.

Attacks that deliberately target healthcare facilities and personnel are in violation of international law, and particularly UN Security Council resolution 2286, which was put forward by France and which calls for protecting medical facilities and personnel in conflicts.

France underscores the urgent need for an effective cessation of hostilities and the establishment of safe, immediate, and unfettered access to humanitarian aid for all those in need in Syria.
