Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, took part in a meeting of the International Syria Support Group yesterday in Vienna together with his counterparts in order to relaunch the peace process.
The work in Vienna and the final communiqué include, in follow-up to the ministerial meeting that Jean-Marc Ayrault chaired in Paris on May 9, concrete proposals for:
- demanding an immediate cessation of all military operations, except to combat the terrorist groups recognized as such by the UN;
- ensuring respect for international humanitarian law, while the Syrian regime continues to besiege hundreds of thousands of inhabitants;
- facilitating the resumption of negotiations aimed at establishing a transitional government with full executive powers by August 1, in accordance with UNSCR 2254.
The communiqué adopted in Vienna on May 17 is a helpful step forward and must now be fully implemented by all parties. France will pay careful attention to this.
