Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, will today take part in a ministerial meeting on Syria in the presence of his counterparts from Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and United States and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
The ministers and Ms Mogherini will review the situation on the ground, at a time when the regime and its supporters are continuing their offensives and laying siege to the population, particularly in Aleppo, in flagrant violation of international commitments and United Nations resolutions.
Jean-Marc Ayrault will stress the need to step up the efforts being made to combat terrorism. He will recall that, in keeping with the French President’s commitments, we shall intensify our military action against Daesh [so-called ISIL].
It is more urgent than ever to establish a political transition in Syria, in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254 and the International Syria Support Group’s communiqué of 17 May.
