Syria – Bashar al-Assad’s speech (Q&A - Excerpt from the daily press briefing - August 5, 2013)
A : Bashar al-Assad’s speech yesterday once again demonstrated his resolve to continue the bloody crackdown on the Syrian people’s legitimate aspirations to democracy that he began in March 2011.
It comes at a time when the president of the Syrian National Coalition, Ahmad al-Jarba, said he was open to seeking a negotiated solution that would allow for the implementation of the Geneva Communiqué. He confirmed this during his meeting with members of the UN Security Council on July 26 in New York.
France reaffirms the need for a political process culminating in a credible transition toward a free and democratic Syria. It supports the prospect of a second Geneva conference and the implementation of the Geneva Communiqué, particularly the training of a transition authority with all executive powers, and notably control of over the military and security apparatuses.
