Meeting between Laurent Fabius and the members of the International Commission of Inquiry on Syria (Paris, May 30, 2013)
Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs, received the members of the International Commission of Inquiry on the human rights situation in Syria.
Mr. Fabius reaffirmed France’s support for the work of this commission which has gathered a great deal of information on the serious human rights violations committed in Syria. In particular, he underscored that the fight against impunity, which should be underpinned by the International Criminal Court, is inseparable from the search for a political solution.
The minister of foreign affairs also discussed the most recent developments in the Syrian crisis and preparations for the Geneva conference.
He welcomed the adoption yesterday by the UN Human Rights Council of a resolution condemning the massacre by the Syrian authorities and its allies of the population of Qusayr. The resolution denounces the increasingly tragic situation prevailing in Syria. The violence against civilian populations must stop and there must be justice for the Syrian people for all the crimes that have been committed, regardless of the perpetrators; these are the requirements of the international community, strongly expressed through this resolution.
