Syria – United Nations (May 22, 2014)
Although the resolution presented by France referring the situation to the ICC was co-sponsored by 65 states, publicly supported by 100 NGOs and approved by 13 UN Security Council member states, it was vetoed by Russia and China. These vetoes further demonstrate the importance - as France has proposed - of guidelines governing the use of vetoes in the case of mass atrocities.
France remains mobilized, at the Human Rights Council, as well as at the UN General Assembly where an event dedicated to starvation as a method of warfare will take place on June 4 in order to denounce the crimes committed in Syria and to fight against impunity.
It supports the efforts of the Syrian National Coalition which demonstrated its support for this resolution and its attachment to a democratic Syria that will respect human rights and the rule of law.
