Syria’s shelling of the Turkish town of Akçakale - Statement by Laurent Fabius (October 4, 2012)

I utterly condemn Syria’s shelling of the Turkish town of Akçakale, which killed five civilians – a woman and her four children – and wounded others.

I extend France’s condolences to the Turkish government and people, and the victims’ families.

This violation of international law is a serious threat to international peace and security. The international community can not allow the Syrian regime to continue its acts of violence, both inside and outside its borders. This must be ended immediately.

I spoke yesterday to Ahmet Davutoğlu, Turkey’s Foreign Minister, whom I assured of France’s support and solidarity. Consultations are continuing at the United Nations and NATO. France, like the other allies, stands alongside Turkey.

I hope and ask that the whole international community, particularly through the Security Council, clearly and swiftly sends an extremely strong message of condemnation to the Syrian authorities.
