Syria (Q&A - Excerpt from the daily press briefing - August 30, 2012)

Q: What is your view regarding the resignations – including that of Ms. Kodmani – within the SNC? Is Paris trying to connect with interlocutors other than the SNC which seems to have been weakened?

A : We’ve taken note of the resignation of Ms. Basma Kodmani. She indicated that she would remain fully engaged in her fight for a democratic Syria.

We’re engaged in continuous dialogue with all strands of the opposition, and notably with the Syrian National Council which was received by President Hollande and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Laurent Fabius, on August 21. On this occasion, President Hollande “paid tribute to the Syrian National Council’s commitment to a free and democratic Syria that respects human rights and the rights of each of its communities.”

During his speech to the ambassadors on August 27, President Hollande also called for the formation of “an inclusive and representative interim government that can become the legitimate representative of the new Syria.”
