Syria – Destruction of the medieval market of the city of Aleppo (October 1, 2012)
France expresses its strong condemnation following the destruction by a fire of the medieval market of Aleppo as a result of heavy bombing. The market was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. This event reflects the upsurge in violence in Syria and shows that the regime will stop at nothing in order to pursue its indiscriminate crackdown.
We reaffirm our strong condemnation of the bombing targeted against the civilian population in Aleppo as well as in the rest of the country.
France remains committed alongside the Syrian people and will continue to maintain pressure on the Damascus regime in order to prevent further massacres. The violence that the regime is using against its own people amounts to war crimes and crimes against humanity, as the Human Rights Council just reaffirmed on September 28. All those involved in these crimes will be held to account.
