Darfur – Death of a Rwandan UNAMID soldier (May 24, 2014)
France condemns the attack perpetrated on May 24 against peacekeepers belonging to the United Nations-African Union Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), which left a Rwandan soldier dead.
We express our condolences to the victim’s family as well as to the UN, the African Union and the Rwandan authorities. We call on the Sudanese government to guarantee the safety of UNAMID personnel and to swiftly investigate this attack in order to bring those responsible to justice.
France deplores the upsurge in violence in Darfur where clashes between armed groups and abuses against the civilian populations have led to the displacement of more than 300,000 people since February. It reaffirms its support for UNAMID’s action and for the states that are helping to consolidate peace in Darfur.
