Since 1985, bilateral institutional relations between France and Spain have taken the form of biannual meetings (a "summit" chaired by the French President and the Spanish head of government, and a high-level meeting chaired by the French Prime Minister) that have paved the way for close relations between the two countries.

The 22nd bilateral summit, held in Paris on 10 0ctober 2012, focused on our shared determination to speed up implementation of the June 2012 European Council decisions, to expand our bilateral cooperation via new projects (joint action plan on drugs signed by the respective Ministers of the Interior; energy and rail links across the Pyrenees) and to underscore the convergence of our views on the key international issues of the day (Sahel, Syria, Iran). The next summit will be held in Spain, on 27 November 2013.
