South Africa – Audiovisual cooperation - Records of the trial of Nelson Mandela (March 17, 2016)

The president of the Institut National de l’Audiovisuel and France’s ambassador to South Africa officially presented the South African minister of arts and culture with the last group of sound recordings from the trial of Nelson Mandela and the leaders of the African National Congress (the Rivonia Trial), which were restored and digitized in France.

Featuring 230 hours of audio, these recordings are a unique record of South Africa’s history and the fight for human dignity.

The return of this last set is the final step in the digitization of a collection that has been part of UNESCO’s Memory of the World register since 2007.

France is pleased to contribute in this way to the preservation of this extraordinary South African and universal heritage. This cooperation continued thanks to signing of an agreement to restore and digitize the archives from other apartheid-era trials.
