Somalia – Visit to London by Pascal Canfin (May 7, 2013)
Pascal Canfin, Minister Delegate for Development, participated in the Somalia Conference in London May 7.
This conference aimed to strengthen the partnership between the Somali authorities and the international community in order to support the stabilization process under way. It was co-chaired by British Prime Minister David Cameron and Somali President Hassan Sheik Mohamud.
It provided an opportunity to discuss the main challenges associated with the current situation in Somalia, notably security, justice, public finances and the fight against sexual violence. It provided fresh impetus to the effective coordination of international efforts to advance governance in Somalia. Strengthening the rule of law and ensuring that the populations have better access to justice are key to promoting the fundamental rights of the Somali people.
France and the EU are mobilized to help Somalia. The efforts of the European Union are essential, especially with respect to security. The EU deploys 3 missions within the framework of its Common Security and Defense Policy: Operation Atalanta, EUCAP NESTOR and EUTM Somalia. It has provided financial support to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) since its creation in 2007.
