Somalia – Political process (August 20, 2012)

While August 20 marks the end of the political transition period, France welcomes the progress made so far in this process. It urges Somalia’s political and traditional leaders to do everything possible to fulfill the tasks assigned to them in order to move their country into a new political era. The success of the transition depends on their commitment and their contribution.

France calls for calm and an easing of tensions. This process must continue to be legitimate, transparent, participatory and inclusive. The fight against corruption and nepotism should be a priority for the Somali people. Those who obstruct this institutional normalization process or threaten the territorial integrity of the country will be subject to action by the international community.

France continues to stand alongside Somalia in its efforts to stabilize the country, in particular through its support for AMISOM and the training of Somali soldiers within the framework of the EU Training Mission (EUTM) for Somalia. We call for commitments from new contributors in order to support the European Union’s efforts to finance AMISOM.
