Somalia – Murder of two journalists in Mogadishu (October 1, 2012)
France condemns the murders on September 27 and 28 in Mogadishu of Abdirahman Mohamed Ali and Ahmed Abdulahi Farah, which come on top of other murders of journalists in Somalia.
France extends its condolences to the families, colleagues and friends of these two journalists. It is extremely concerned by the upsurge in Somalia of attacks against journalists and individuals working for the media.
It calls on the new authorities to take immediate measures to improve public safety. It’s their responsibility to guarantee the safety of journalists and to allow them to provide information in an independent manner, without fear of being targeted by violence.
France reaffirms its attachment to the freedom of expression and the protection of journalists. It calls on the states to ensure the implementation of the relevant UN resolutions, notably UNSCR 1738 and the resolution on the safety of journalists that has just been adopted by the Human Rights Council.
