Somalia – Adoption of UNSCR 2124 (New York, November 12, 2013
France welcomes yesterday’s unanimous adoption by the UN Security Council of resolution 2124 devoted to the situation in Somalia. By approving an increase in troop strength of 4,400 soldiers for the African Union operation in Somalia (AMISOM), it will enable this operation, with the support of the Somali forces, to step up action against the extremist groups that are continuing to obstruct peace.
In this resolution, the Security Council also calls on the Federal Government of Somalia to intensify its efforts to consolidate the positive results achieved so far and to advance security, stability and good governance. The establishment of legitimate local administrations in the areas liberated from extremist groups should therefore make it possible to respond to the needs of the populations.
The reconciliation efforts are also a priority. To that end, the national dialogue initiated with the support of the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development and the United Nations will notably help to address constitutional issues and to prepare for the elections scheduled to take place in 2016.
