Somalia - Adoption of a Provisional Constitution (August 2, 2012)

France welcomes the August 1st adoption of a Provisional Constitution for Somalia by the Somali Constituent Assembly, which has been meeting in Mogadishu since July 25. It should make it possible to conclude the transition process, scheduled for August 20.

It also welcomes the progress made in the political transition process and calls on all of Somalia’s leaders to implement all measures to complete the transition period in an atmosphere of security and to establish stability and democracy in Somalia. In accordance with Security Council Resolution 2036, those who impede this institutional normalization or threaten the country’s territorial integrity will expose themselves to severe measures by the international community.

France hopes that the spirit of openness and reconciliation that has characterized the development of this new basic law will continue throughout the rest of the process. It stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Somalia in its stabilization efforts, particularly in its support for AMISOM and the training of Somali soldiers as part of the EU Training Mission (EUTM) for Somalia.

It will continue to support Somalia in this regard.
