France and Slovakia
Regarded in Slovak history through the favourable prism of General Stefanik, tragic hero of Czechoslovak independence, and the participation of French combatants, escaped prisoners from Poland, in the national uprising in 1944, France was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic ties with Slovakia after the proclamation of its independence on 1 January 1993.
The French President received Slovakia’s Prime Minister in Paris on 2 October 2007. This meeting confirmed the continuity of the European choices of the country and the global convergence between the two countries on many community subjects. On this occasion, French President Nicolas Sarkozy proposed the entry into a strategic partnership that has been signed in Paris by the French President and the Slovak Prime Minister on September 17, 2008.
On the occasion of the commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the death of General Stefanik, Jean-Marie Bockel, Secretary of State for Defence, visited Bratislava 4 May 2009.
