Political relations

Diplomatic relations between France and Serbia (then the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) were re-established on 16 November 2000. Political relations since then have been sustained: a meeting between Presidents Sarkozy and Tadić in Evian in October 2008, official visits to France by President Tadić in May 2009 and April 2011, regular meetings of respective Foreign Ministers and "technical" ministers in the two capitals. Mr. Jean Leonetti, Minister responsible for European Affairs, visited Belgrade on 6 and 7 October 2011. After Serbia’s new government took office, Mrs. Suzana Grubjesic, Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, visited Paris from 11 to 13 February 2013, while Serbian Prime Minister and Minister for Internal Affairs Ivica Dacic met his counterparts, Jean-Marc Ayrault and Manuel Valls in Paris on 4 April this year.

On 8 April 2011, the French and Serbian governments signed a strategic partnership and cooperation agreement that aims to provide new impetus and a framework for bilateral relations between the two countries, in accordance with the wishes expressed by both Presidents at their earlier meeting in May 2009. The main lines of cooperation are: support for Serbia’s accession to the European Union; development cooperation and exchanges of information on economic, energy and environmental issues; defence cooperation; university, scientific, linguistic and cultural cooperation; consolidating relations in the areas of security and internal affairs.

In common with the other European countries, France expressed its full support at both the Zagreb Summit in 2000 (chaired by France) and the 2003 Thessaloniki Summit for the "European perspective of the Western Balkans", which naturally includes Serbia. France also supported Serbia’s application to become a member of the United Nations and of the Council of Europe.
