Saudi Arabia – Execution of Nimr Ben Fahid al-Soubeï (February 26, 2013)
France condemns the beheading of Nimr Ben Fahid al-Soubeï in Saudi Arabia on February 26. This execution brings the number of people executed in this country since the beginning of the year to 17, making Saudi Arabia a country with one of the highest execution rates.
France again expresses its deep concern at the alarming rate of executions in Saudi Arabia. These executions contradict the global trend toward the abolition of this inhuman punishment, reflected by the adoption in December by the UN General Assembly of a resolution calling for the universal abolition of the death penalty. *
France is campaigning for the universal abolition of the death penalty and as Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed, France expresses its firm and constant opposition to the death penalty everywhere and under all circumstances. France again urges Saudi Arabia to put an end to the executions and to establish a moratorium.
