Russia - Telephone conversation between Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov (19 April 2017)

On 19 April 2017, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development had a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.

They discussed the situation in Syria following the chemical attack on the village of Khan Sheikhoun.

Jean-Marc Ayrault stressed the importance of allowing the mechanisms of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and United Nations to establish the facts and those responsible for this attack, in accordance with their mandate. He reaffirmed France’s trust in these mechanisms.

Mr Ayrault also discussed the urgent need for a genuine ceasefire in Syria and stressed the necessity of ensuring that its implementation is monitored by the international community to ensure it is fully and sustainably implemented.

He stated his willingness to cooperate with Russia to fight terrorism and made the case for the quick resumption of negotiations in preparation for a political transition in compliance with the Geneva Communiqué and United Nations Security Council resolution 2254.
