Russia – France’s support for the work of NGOs and human rights defenders (October 22, 2012)
Three Russian human rights defenders and NGO representatives, Tanya Lokshina, Deputy Director of Human Rights Watch’s Moscow office, Igor Kalyapin, Chairman of the Inter-Regional Committee against Torture, and Sergey Babinets, member of the Joint Mobile Group, were received at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 17 and 19 by the human rights ambassador and the director responsible for continental Europe.
The discussions focused on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms in Russia and in the North Caucasus region, notably the forthcoming entry into force of a federal law on NGOs receiving funding from abroad.
France reaffirms its full support for the work of NGOs and human rights defenders and pays tribute to their courage, commitment and determination with respect to defending fundamental rights, in Russia like everywhere else in the world.
