Situation in the Gulf - Q&A - Excerpts from the daily press briefing (07.07.17)

Q - Are you afraid that the conflict in the Gulf will become entrenched, and are you concerned about an impact on your economic interests in the region?

A - As we have said, our priority is the swift easing of tensions. In this regard, we reiterate our support for the Kuwaiti mediation effort and hope the parties will be able to get back on the path of dialogue and find a lasting resolution to their disputes. Regional stability and the effectiveness of our collective fight against terrorism depend on this.

France’s exports to the six countries of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) amounted to 10.4 billion euros in 2016, representing a positive trade balance of 4.8 billion euros.

These countries are major investors in France. Current tensions in the Gulf are not having an effect on this trade for the time being, but this crisis is in no one’s political or economic interest. Given France’s significant ties with these countries in the areas of tourism and aviation, we are paying close attention in particular to the evolution of the situation of their airlines.
