France and Palau

The main objective of our action is to maintain the ties with this small island State and to further its relations with the French Pacific communities, including New Caledonia.

President Remengesau visited Paris to attend COP21 on 30 November 2015. He had already visited France on 8 and 9 June 2015 for UNESCO World Oceans Day and attended a seminar organized by the French Senate’s France-Vanuatu-Pacific Islands Friendship Group.

Projects in the fields of vocational training and cultural development (translation of a book on the Palauan language) were financed by the French Foreign Ministry’s Pacific Fund. Other sectors have been supported by France, in partnership with our three Pacific communities (New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Wallis and Futuna):

  • renewable energies (installation of solar panels and technical training in photovoltaic system maintenance);
  • environmental conservation: project to safeguard biodiversity and endangered species (dugongs); Coral Reef Initiative for the South Pacific (CRISP) for the protection of coral reefs.

France has an honorary consul in Melekeok.
