Pakistan – Assassination attempt against Malala Yousafzai (October 10, 2012)
France condemns in the strongest possible terms the heinous attack in Pakistan on young Malala Yousafzai and two of her classmates as they were returning home from school.
In 2009, when she was just 11 years old, Malala Yousafzai kept a blog denouncing Taliban atrocities and championing girls’ education. The Pakistani government awarded her its National Youth Peace Prize in December 2011. She is also the president of a children’s assembly, a forum organized by UNICEF in the Swat Valley.
This assassination attempt against a young girl illustrates the cowardice and cruelty of the Pakistani Taliban, who claimed credit for the action.
France urges the Pakistani authorities to hunt down those who ordered and perpetrated this attack and to swiftly bring them to justice.
Malala Yousafzai’s courage and activism at a young age symbolize Pakistani society’s refusal to yield to fundamentalism and extremism. France expresses its full solidarity with her and her two classmates.
