Political relations

Political relations

During the 1990s, political relations between France and Norway recovered markedly because of Oslo’s concern with keeping Norway anchored to Europe, despite Norway rejecting EU membership in 1994. Bilateral contacts are steady.

On 16 May 2008, the French President received Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.

On 4 June 2008 and 15 January 2009, Mr. Gahr Støre met with Mr. Kouchner. Again on 26 January 2010 in Paris, Messrs. Kouchner and Stoere had a brief bilateral meeting, alongside a dinner on the follow-up to the Paris Conference on the Near East, also bringing together Ms. Ashton, Mr. Tony Blair and the Egyptian Foreign Affairs Minister. Mr. Stoere participated in another dinner in Paris in the same format on 1 July 2010.

On 22 October 2009, the Secretary of State for International Development, Haakon Gulbrandsen, participated in the meeting of the working group on innovative financing, chaired by Minister Kouchner at the Quai d’Orsay.

Finally, this past 13-14 June, Prime Minister François FILLON, accompanied by Ms. Idrac and Ms. Jouanno, as well as Mr. Lellouche, made an official visit to Norway.

Norway and France share similar positions on international issues: ensuring stability in Europe through relationships of trust with Russia, paying attention to peacekeeping operations and strengthening the effectiveness of the UN, and development assistance. Norway also shows keen to speak with the Member States of the EU dialogue on ESDP. Accordingly, the Norwegian government has devised a “strategy” to develop and structure ties with France. A more intensive bilateral dialogue on the Great North and the energy issues of this region will be a key part of our bilateral relationship in the years to come. Indeed, a strategic dialogue on energy was established on the initiative of the two Foreign Affairs ministers. The fourth session of this dialogue took place in Oslo on January 6, 2010.
