Laurent Fabius’s participation in the Regional Ministerial Meeting on Border Security (Rabat, November 14, 2013)
Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs, participated in the 2nd Regional Ministerial Meeting on Border Security in Rabat. This meeting, focusing on Libya, brought together its neighbors and partners in order to improve regional cooperation with respect to border management, in follow-up to the conference held in Tripoli in March 2012.
Laurent Fabius expressed France’s support for Libya and confirm our commitment to helping it overcome the challenges that it faces during this transition period. It was in this spirit that we hosted a conference in Paris on February 12 aimed at providing support to the Libyan authorities.
The challenges posed by trafficking, illegal immigration and terrorism concern us all and require more effective control of Libya’s border areas, and more generally the Sahara-Sahel region. France hopes that the Rabat conference would provide an opportunity to strengthen regional cooperation in a spirit of dialogue and solidarity and is ready to support all initiatives in that regard.
Lastly, this conference provided an opportunity to urge the international community to help Libya and the states of the region in this task. We would therefore like the role of the EU border management training and advisory mission (EUBAM Libya), launched this summer, to be further strengthened.
