Nigeria – Enactment of a law against homosexuality (January 14, 2014)
France expresses its deep concern at the enactment of a law in Nigeria strengthening the criminalization of homosexuality in the country.
In violation of the international commitments to which Nigeria has freely subscribed, this law restricts the freedom of association, assembly and expression and undermines the fundamental rights of LGBT persons.
Human rights, as recognized in the international texts, are universal. All individuals should be able to enjoy the same protection of these rights, whatever their sexual orientation or gender identity. France reaffirms that the laws criminalizing homosexuality also expose LGBT persons and the defenders of their rights to violence and have a disastrous impact on public health.
