France and Nauru

Presentation

Our relations with Nauru remain limited.

The President of the Republic of Nauru, Baron Waqa, attended the COP21 in Paris (30 November 2015). Previously, Milton Dube, Special Envoy of the President of Nauru represented his country at the High-Level Dialogue on Climate Change chaired by the President of the French Republic, François Hollande, and held at offices of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) in Nouméa in November 2014.

In March 2013, Nauru co-sponsored, with the Solomon Islands and Tuvalu, a draft
resolution requesting the inclusion of French Polynesia on the United Nations’ list of Non-Self-Governing Territories. This resolution was adopted without a vote on 17 May 2013 despite the victory of the self-governing camp when the Assembly of French Polynesia was renewed in early May.

The French Ambassador to Suva is accredited to Nauru.
