While Moldovan foreign trade continues to shift towards the EU market, which provides 44.5% of Moldovan needs (ahead of the CIS: 32.7%), France remains a relatively modest supplier, in 11th position (1.9% of all Moldovan imports). Bilateral trade remains limited (France is Moldova’s 16th largest client, 1.1% of total Moldovan exports) and French imports of Moldovan products undiversified (mainly agricultural products and textiles). Transportation equipment and mechanical hardware top our exports to this country. On the other hand, Moldova occupies a weak position in France’s trade (below the 100th rank).
France is one of the leading foreign investors in Moldova. The main companies operating in Moldova are France Telecom/Orange (Voxtel, the number one mobile provider in the country), Lafarge, Lactalis (dairy), and Société Générale (majority shareholder in Mobiasbanca, one of the country’s major banks). A French-Moldovan business club was officially opened by the Secretary of State for European Affairs in November 2009.
