France and Mauritania
Historically, France and Mauritania have long maintained close and special relations.
Following a period of tension in 1999 (over the Ould Dah affair), relations between the two countries intensified from 2001 onwards, and especially after the 2005-2007 transition to democracy. This was reflected in the visit to Paris by President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi from 27 to 30 October 2007. In the course of the visit, a Partnership Framework Document was signed by Mohamed Lemine, Mauritania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and Jean-Marie Bockel, Secretary of State for Cooperation and Francophony.
Alongside its partners in the International Contact Group, France played a part in seeking a consensus solution to the crisis sparked by the coup of 6 August 2008. The first bilateral overseas visit made by democratically elected President Abdel Aziz was to France, on 26 to 28 October 2009.
