Mali – Renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) (New York, June 25, 2014)
France welcomes the unanimous adoption by the UN Security Council of resolution 2164.
This resolution renews the mandate of the UN force in Mali (MINUSMA) for one year.
It notably specifies two priorities for action:
the strengthening of MINUSMA’s presence in northern Mali so that it can fully implement its mandate to protect civilians;
the strengthening of MINUSMA’s action at the political level: the resolution therefore calls on the UN secretary-general’s special representative to support the immediate launch of inclusive peace talks, in coordination with the parties and the regional and international actors.
Resolution 2164 also reaffirms the importance of the peace process based on the Ouagadougou Agreement and the ceasefire agreement of May 23 and underscores the efforts of Algeria and Burkina Faso in their role as ECOWAS mediators.
