Situation in Mali (July 3, 2012)
The news we’re getting from Mali is troubling.
In Timbuktu, the deliberate and systematic destruction of Muslim holy sites, as well as the door to the mosque, constitutes a further affront to the people of Mali. This destruction violates the dignity and deepest beliefs of thousands of practicing Muslims.
In Gao, the population is being held hostage. In a context of war and food crises, anti-personnel mines have now reportedly been planted all around the city restricting the movement of the population. In our view, this would amount to an act of terrorism.
