Libya – Election of the prime minister (September 13, 2012)
Tragic events took place on Tuesday, September 11 in Libya, with the attack against the American consulate in Benghazi, during which the ambassador and 3 other American diplomats were murdered. The French authorities strongly condemned these murders.
Yesterday, the General National Congress elected a new prime minister in Libya in an election that was conducted in a transparent and democratic manner.
France congratulates Mr. Mustafa Abu Shagour. It would like him to effectively and firmly pursue the transition process under way, in accordance with the aspirations expressed by the Libyan people during the July 7 elections.
It calls for a swift and exemplary response by the new head of government in the face of the deteriorating security situation in the country which could pose a serious threat to the gains achieved during the Libyan revolution.
France, which, from the outset, has supported the aspirations of the Libyan people, will remain engaged alongside the new authorities in order to support them in this task.
It would notably like the process of re-establishing the rule of law to continue in a climate of trust and national unity.
