Cultural, scientific and technical cooperation
In recent years, the French language has been the subject of renewed interest in Latvia, but it still holds a modest place in foreign language education. In 2008, a memorandum on a multiyear French training programme in the Latvian government was signed. Latvia became an observer member of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie during the Quebec summit in October 2008.
In 2005, the cultural season, "Surprising Latvia", featured the Latvian culture through some 100 events in 25 French towns. "French Cultural Springtime" in 2007 in Latvia was the biggest French cultural event ever organized in Northern Europe. These two seasons have increased the visibility of the Robert Schuman cultural centre, opened in 2005 at a new site in the heart of Riga. The Comédie Française went to Riga in February 2009. France should also organize cultural events, in the context of “Riga, capital of culture 2014”.
The Ampère initiative is a research programme on magnetohydrodynamics established in 2007 through a partnership between the CEA, CNRS and the physics institute of Latvia.
