France and Kiribati

Relations between France and the Republic of Kiribati are relatively modest. A maritime delimitation agreement with French Polynesia was signed on 18 December 2002 in Tarawa. Through the Pacific Fund, France has financed cooperation projects in the fields of education, biodiversity (Tarawa Lagoon), and water and mineral resources (Banaba Island).

President Anote Tong attended the High-Level Dialogue on Climate Change chaired by the President of the French Republic in Nouméa on 17 November 2014, during which he spoke with the French Minister of Foreign Affairs. He visited Paris for the Fourth France-Oceania Summit on 30 November 2015, as well as for COP21.

President Taneti Maamau visited Papeete on 10-12 February 2017, a month after the visit to Nouméa by Mr Kourabi Nemen, Vice-President of Kiribati.
